I came to Keswick on a two-week contract. Yet one month on I’m still here and it looks like I will be for another month again, if not longer. In some ways the four weeks has felt like four minutes. Then sometimes it feels like everything before this has been my ‘past life’.

I’m not living in the middle of nowhere. The Lake District, and Keswick in particular, is one of the most visited regions of England. The ridiculous concentration of B&Bs is proof of that. Yet I am a world away from the lifestyles I’ve known previously – but that’s a whole other story.

So what exactly am I falling in love with? See for yourself. Some highlights from my first month in the paradise I’m calling home.

My first walk around Derwentwater
Stunning weather for my first walk around Derwentwater

Despite the tourist numbers, it’s easy not to see a soul

Even a stroll up the road has its rewards
I love the sheep. You’d never guess I grew up on a sheep farm. The novelty hasn’t worn off.
Gorgeous Lake District countryside. All that rain is good for something – it’s so green
The weather was turning but this valley is still a sight.

The clouds start to lift, unfortunately after I’d reached and left the summit of Skiddaw – England’s 4th highest fell

This walk up Walla Crag is my favourite so far. I loved the colours of the vegetation.

I saw this track from the bus on my first trip to Keswick and thought it would be fun to do. It was! It’s Grisedale Pike. I’m slowly learning the names.

Bassenthwaite Lake. This was a little stroll to stretch the legs that turned into a 16km walk.

I walked along this road for a mile only to reach the village and learn the bus stop is on the main road. Views like this made it worth it though.
