A few weeks ago, after turning 27, I wrote about some of my goals for the coming year. But today I read a post by one of my favourite bloggers, Adventurous Kate, which has inspired another type of Bucket List.
I’ve decided to write about it here because since setting off on my latest travels, I’ve had endless people tell me how jealous they are and how they’d love to do what I’m doing. I can’t put it any better than Kate so here are her thoughts about people who tell her the same thing:
They dream about travel — but they spend money on nights out with friends, or having an apartment in the best part of town, or going to dozens of pricey concerts a year.
The motto? If you really want to travel, do it. Kate encouraged her readers to take part in the Travel Priorities Challenge and create a list of places and things you really, truly desperately want to see or do, so here’s mine:
- Visit Turkey. It could be the promise of authentic Turkish Delight or the oh-so-strong coffee, but for some reason I’ve had a burning desire to go to Turkey for a long time. This is also on my goal list for the next year.
- See polar bears in the wild. I’m not going to cuddle one, however much I really want to. But to see them, whether it be from a helicopter or a tour bus, would be incredible. I’m pretty close right now (in Canada), but it’s just not going to happen.
- Travel on the Ghan. It’s Australia’s most incredible rail journey and I’m almost ashamed to say I haven’t done it yet, but I guess it’s easy to think there is plenty of time to do things close to home.
- Take a road trip across Montana. A photographer friend of mine, Heath Holden, spent some time here and his photos are amazing. I fell in love. His images of the landscape, at any time of year, give me butterflies. Me + car + camera + Montana = Trip of a lifetime.
The challenge is to cross off one thing on the list in the next two years.
To those people who keep telling me they want to do what I’m doing, here’s a start. Take part in the Travel Priority Challenge and make it happen.
List your dream places in the comments below…it’s a start.

I just read Kate’s post too & agree that so many people talk about achieving their goals without making the necessary sacrifices.
Kudos to you, great list!
Thanks Annette. I think Bucket Lists are great…but only if you actually do them 🙂
Pegs, thank you so much for your kind words! I’m thrilled to hear that this post made an impact on you. I spent time in Turkey this past fall and I think you’d really like it. Istanbul is one vibrant, eclectic city!
Thanks Kate. Your post really hit home. I’ve had so many people tell me they want to travel more and of course the response is always “so do it”. Hopefully this gives them a little nudge….
Oh, so Kate started a movement? I still call it a bucket list… and I’ve been crossing things off mine for a year now 🙂
I think a little movement may have been started hehe…or at least it was a little kick in the pants to start doing some of the things we’ve always dreamed about. That’s awesome your crossing things off your list Ian. It’s such a great feeling.
